Debrecen, Hungary (Debrecen, Ungarn) (Debrecen, Magyarország) 04.2011.

April is usually one of the best months for photographing plants and animals. I show some plants and insects that were photographed in gardens, parks and in the forest called Nagyerdő in Debrecen (some insects where collected when I did not have my camera with me and photographed later). Among the plants there will be quite common herbaceous ones that can be found all around Europe in ruderal plant communities - but I'll try to show them in a different perspective. Most people never notice how nice these common plants may be. And by showing some rare insects, I'd like to demonstrate that sometimes there is a suprising, hidden biodiversity even in cities. Sustaining a healthy environment in city parks and gardens (e.g. avoiding insecticides, leaving some decaying wood in parks, propagating native plant species, etc.) may be a great help for animal and plant biodiversity. Beside its intrinsic value, insect biodiversity has an economical value also: different bee and fly species pollinate different types of garden and agricultural plants; many insects prey on agricultural/horticultural pests; many help by accelerating the decomposition of dead organic material, etc. Location: Debrecen. Date: 09-22.04.2011.

A legtöbben sosem veszik észre, milyen szépek lehetnek ezek a gyakori növényfajok. Hely: Debrecen. Dátum: 2011.04.09-22.

The Common Dandelion (Taraxacum sp). It is a plant known worldwide and even children can name this species. But in fact there's more to it than one would think: these plants are divided into so-called microspecies, which are taxonomically delineated (meta)populations of a so-called macrospecies (or agglomeration). Delineating these microspecies is extremely hard (in fact, some of them may be of no taxonomic value) and so they are distinguished from conventional species. The reason that there are so many microspecies is that plants usually tolerate polyploidy (normal and polyploid populations are generally not interfertile) and many are able to reproduce asexually (apomyxis). There are over 500 such microspecies in the genus Taraxacum in Europe! More than 230 microspecies are known from Great Britain and Ireland. However, in many countries, not much research has been done about these plants, so there are probably many species that await description. See some recent articles about new Taraxacum species here.

So, this picture shows a member of the Taraxacum genus. But which exactly would be hard to find out. By the way, its young leaves are also edible.
Szóval, ez a kép a Taraxacum genusz egyik tagját mutatja. De hogy melyiket, azt nehéz lenne kideríteni. Egyébként fiatal levelei szintén ehetők.

And now some insects: this fly, an Aulacigaster species, belongs to the extremely rare family Aulacigastridae. The larvae live in tree saps, the adults are always found near the food source. It was found on Hybrid Plane.

Another rare fly: Cacoxenus indagator (Drosophilidae). This fly develops in the nests of solitary bees, where they eat the food originally left there for the bee larvae. But than they have to come out of the nest that has hard walls: they use their heads for that. See a video here.

During the spring I also experimented a bit with a self-made device that enables putting the front lens of my camera under water and thus helps to prevent reflections of the water surface on the photos and  unsharp photos (I glued a plastic bottle and a 52 mm UV filter together, see here). I made some photos of aquatic animals that were found in little ponds in the city of Debrecen. The animals were first put into a little white plastic bowl (I put some sand to the bottom of it).

Than I took some pictures of it with the little device I mentioned - it looks much more interesting when the water surface is visible from the side:

Here's a crop from the original picture to show the image quality that is allowed by the device:
